Abstract
The rapidly increasing importance of suicide as a cause of death in contemporary South Korean society has emerged as a crucial social problem, signaling that a certain pathological phenomenon has gripped the nation, causing some to refer to the country as the ¡°Republic of Suicide¡±. Experts in many fields ? government, civil organizations, academics, to name a few ? have attempted to analyze the ¡°whys¡± of suicide and to seek its remediation. However, previous work has tended to focus on suicide prevention rather than examining it holistically by incorporating analysis of how the psychological wounds might be healed among those who failed in their suicide attempts or in survivor families.
One particular sector of society, that of the religious, has invested its efforts for both the aspect of prevention as well as the healing of survivors. This paper discusses the possibility of a concerted medico-religious approach for dealing with the pathological forces of suicide by expanding the power that religion exerts in the promotion of mental and physical well-being. In addition, we argue that religious institutions can play a key role in tackling this problem through the mobilization of their extensive resources, both material and human.
